Happy and proud to report that Craig Biggio was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame along with Randy Johnson, John Smoltz and Pedro Martinez.
Craig Biggio is the first Astro to be elected. Of course we will claim former Astros, Joe Morgan and Nolan Ryan among others. And I hope that Jeff Bagwell will be in there in the future.
Such good memories of his 20 year career all with the Astros. I recall watching early games in the 1988 season which I think was his rookie year. When he started, he was the catcher.
He then moved to shortstop and then second base. To watch the games I used to go to the local sports bar in the evening and watch on the big screen. I was living at home at the time so there was no cable then plus it was a good excuse to get out of the house for an hour or so.
During those years, there were several division titles, several wild cards, and one magical NL Pennant and World Series appearance. I always thought that I'd try and see the World Series if the Astros made it. But when they did, the first 2 games were on the road (lost both) then the next 2 were on Monday and Tuesday (lost both) and that was it in 2005.
Biggio will be remembered for playing his entire career in Houston, for being a team leader and a tough competitor. The 2000 era teams were built around him and Bagwell and they both upheld that big responsibility.
A happy day to be a baseball fan - America's Game!
