December 26

We had a nice breakfast today to celebrate the end of fantasy football season. The team known as J3 (Jeremy, Jay and .. Todd) won, becoming the first 2 time winner in the 5 year history of the McAllen Fantasy Football League (MFFL). As per our tradition, the winner buys the group breakfast. The trophy was presented and money distributed. Actually I had to follow the Commissioner home to get my check for $355 which is going toward my Las Vegas fund.

This afternoon we had lunch with Sam (today is his birthday) Lori and Lauren. Then we saw the movie "It's Complicated" with Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin. I thought it was good, three stars. Easier to relate to after being married with kids.

This evening Susan was hard at work on our Vegas trip. She decided that the Mandalay Bay was a better hotel for our purposes so we were able to change that on Travelocity. I'll still get to play golf at Shadow Creek, so all is well. We are also going to see Viva Elvis on New Year's Eve. Very Vegas!

Christmas Day 2009

We had a Christmas visitor last night. Not Santa, but a young woman speaking Spanish. She rang our doorbell at midnight, awaking me from a long winter's nap, and with a bit of a start. I had dozed off on the couch and gone to bed early after a big dinner and opening presents Christmas Eve as is our custom.

I thought that the person at the door (a shorter female I could see through the glass) might be some friend of Sarah's. This person had arrived in a Ford pickup (not a sleigh) and had a cell phone in hand so she was not helpless or desititute.

She was looking for Enedelia. No hay Enedelia aqui. Isn't this 312? Yes, but.... My best guess was that she was looking for some friend/relative of Mariana so I gave her that number and she seemed content and left and drove off. I hope she found the right 312 and there was room at that inn.

This morning I went for a run. It was so quiet you could hear birds chirping and even the stop lights flashing. Getting home we had breakfast and then opened our stockings. Then lunch, then dinner. With visitors, meal times come fast and regularly for this cook.

We did go visit our friend Javier working in the hospital emergency room today. Thanks to those who do that work on these holidays. They are the "necessary personnel" of this life.

Christmas Eve - Another memory

A few years back I had the opportunity to go inside my old house growing up at 6142 Olympia. The house was being remodeled and the door was open and no one was living there so I took Sarah for a visit.

Walking through the house, the area that I remember most vividly was the front room where we placed our Christmas tree each year. We lived in that house through the 5th grade for me (1976) and always had the tree in that same place. We used to have Christmas home movies and I can picture us unwrapping the presents since our custom then was to open them on Christmas Day (preferably in the pre-dawn hours about 6:30 a.m.!)

I recall my sister Elizabeth decorating the tree one year by hanging several balls on the lighting wires. It was a nice touch seeing the wire sag under the weight.

When I was about 8, I received a fine present of a hand made workbench by my grandfather who I called "Pawpaw". He had the Cadillac of workbenches in his garage as far as I was concerned and spent a lot of time there. He had all the tools and all the gear.

He made a workbench for me sized for an 8 year old boy. It had some tools with it: a screwdriver, a small hammer. And most importantly, little jars with the top nailed on the top shelf of the bench to keep nails and screws in, just like he had. He obviously had noticed that I admired his bench and he decided to make one custom for me.

Entirely hand made - he must had started early to finish it in time - brought it from Beaumont to Houston in his car - sized for me at that age - no buying something off a store shelf for him. What an effort he made!

I had that bench out in the garage until we moved. I am sure I grew bigger than it and it became a little small. But I do recall it being there until we moved. You can imagine it was built to last.

I have my own bench now. My friend Dale made it for me when we lived in Houston in the 90s. Sometimes it seems it just is a place to put things on, but I do enjoy using it now and then for working on something. Pawpaw's work made an impression!

Here is a nice holiday memory video from Darius Rucker about a memorable present when he was 12. Who knows whose life will be changed on Christmas Day?

The Decade in Review

I received my Rolling Stone magazine recently with "00" on the cover. The issue was dedicated to a review of the 2000s. This decade went quickly and is also worthy of review on This Blog.

Global terrorism hitting the big Western nations affected all of us in the world. Sept 11 2001 was a defining moment we still live with. Not just Americans - when we were in London there was a 9/11 monument. Britain has their 7/7 and Spain the subway bombings. Many soldiers are in Iraq and Afghanistan as a result. Many lives lost.

We are still recovering from the global financial meltdown. Remember Enron? A top performing company in 1999 is down the drain. Home foreclosures, bank bailouts, low interest rates. Financially no one is better off than they were 10 years ago.

Consumer spending is still riding high. With flat, noninflationary pricing and no real investment competition, the ability to buy consumer good and keep the economy churning has reached mainstream status. Retailers always find a way to get in everyone's pocket.

Our move to McAllen TX from Houston in 2002 was a defining step. While its nice to be in a smaller town, I've done more traveling since moving here than I ever did. Prices are certainly low but McAllen is a worldly places and many here set a good example of getting away. That's been a plus.

In the legal world, I have expanding by choice into new areas that I desired to get into: bankruptcy, mechanic's liens, debt collection litigation. I've worked with various Fortune 500 companies, a long time goal. I've continued in two towns to create a significant base of physician clients. I've created two practices in two distinct regions in my career. As I told a friend who was looking for a challenge: "You could move to a new town and start your own law practice!" He wasn't as tough however.

Tort reform has certainly reformed the old way of doing things locally. I've witnessed the change in McAllen - the old dogs have had to learn new tricks which they have not done. The old guard is still holding to old ways but I think I'm on the cusp of what is new. The good old boy network is crumbling and aging and I'm poised to springboard past it to a new network based on more significant traits of a person: content of character to paraphrase MLK.

End of the week

This week has gone by fast. I had expected that there would be a slowing of work but I've been getting lots of new work. I haven't counted but I'm definitely closer to the 52 new matters for the year. Plenty of time to count later.

Today there was a meeting at the court of the judges and attorneys. It was the first time we had got together like that. Informative and collegial. It was something different to be a meeting like that.

There was a Tamale party at the Chamber of Commerce today. I did enjoy talking with my friend Monica from church there. We have a similar life outlook. She is an agent for Met Life.

We're schedule to view our family photos next Monday so I'm looking forward to that. Not easy to get everyone together but we did manage to do it for the photo and it was a lot of fun to take those photos. It was in the nice backyard of our photographer.

We're all scheduled for vacation in Las Vegas starting Dec. 30, so that will be a nice opportunity to all be together also.

Austin in Feb 2010

I've signed up for the Austin Marathon in Feb. 2010. I changed the Houston Marathon to the Half 13.1 and will still plan on a visit then.

But Austin will be a new course, different sights. I'll run right by my old school and through the old neighborhood. Plus I'll have another month to train.

Weekend in Houston

I went to Houston for the weekend to visit my parents. I was supposed to leave Friday but it SNOWED in Houston.

Dad called to suggest I come later and I was able to change my flight via Southwest with no penalty due to weather. So I stayed home Friday night (which was enjoyable) and left Saturday at 10:45. Actually with two days of flights put into one, I didn't leave until 12:00 p.m. arriving 1:00 p.m We had lunch at a favorite place Southwell's and then went to the Houston CC to hit some balls. After we went out and met Richard and Kenny. Richard was to provide me some rental clubs for our game Sunday. He promised to "put a set together" for me. Callaway, Ping, Cobra? I chose Ping.

After Susannah came over and we had dinner at Ed and Kate's before the UT/Nebraska Big 12 Championship came on. I watched the 1st half there and then went to Elizabeth's to watch the rest. Mom & Dad tend to go to bed early.

What a finish! Talk about winning ugly. But that is what teams of destiny do - they win games that others would lose. UT 13, Nebraska 12. Looking forward to the BCS Championship on Jan. 7 2010.

This morning I got up to go run. Have not done so since Wednesday. I enjoyed a 6 mile run, got some Starbucks and got home just in time to change and head back to the golf course with Ed.
We teed off at 10:00 with Richard and his daughter Laurie. That was a pleasant surprise. It was cool and misty all day but we did get in 18 holes and I hit the rental clubs well. Shot 87 from the "forward tees". Memorial is still long enough from there. Aftewards it was straight to the airport where I finally got a real meal at Barry's Pizza and caught the 3:45 flight to HRL and then back home.

Dad & Daughter

I had a nice day with my dear daughter. She sent me a text during the day to pick her up early at 3:00 p.m. One of the benefits of being a good student: get out of school when you like :) So I went to get her since she had advisory during the last period (study hall). She need to leave early to....
go shop at Wal Mart for large candy cane props for the Color Guard parade on Friday.

Then later just as I was settling in, she announced we should go to Target to get warm clothes for the parade since its been cold. So off we go. She had fun shopping and showed off the whole outfit she got for tomorrow.

We got to talking about loud sneezing, a trait we share. She told me about sneezing loudly in class during someone's presentation. I told her about sneezing during the Briargrove Elementary spelling bee.

I was in the 4th grade and we were watching from the audience for the 5th grade championship. It was the finals. A word was asked: "superfluous".

S-U-P-E-R- F...[AAAAHHH CHOOOO!!!!]

{entire audience looks around at me]

Teacher: Please start over

Student: S-U-P-E-R-F-L-O-U-S

Teacher: Wrong

Everyone in the school blamed me for that. "She had it right before you ruined it" True or not, that's what they thought. I didn't even know the person. I recall I did know how to spell the word.

Now its 11:45 pm and I'm cooking pasta for her while she does her homework. She complimented me that I was always around. I told her many children could not say that so I think we're doing OK

Another Blog - Go Turley Go!

I've created another blog to hold the info from my old Yahoo 360 blog from 2006 to 2009. All valuable, copyrighted, original writing by Mr. Gregory Turley. It has a unique place in American History and I expect that it will inspire future generations for the better.

http://goturleygo.wordpress.com

Don't worry - you'll continue to get regular updates here and I expect to merge the two at some point.

From Jeff Galloway

In response to a mean-spirted comment about slower marathon runners.

From Jeff Galloway, someone who has done a lot to inspire many to attempt the marathon (including me!)

Amen!
______________

Almost all of the runners I hear from respect anyone who takes on the marathon challenge because it tends to change one's life for the better. I've spoken to hundreds of very accomplished people (CEOs, engineers, inventors, artists, professors, even professionals in other sports) who place the finishing of a marathon at the top of their list of lifetime achievements.

While we are experiencing an epidemic of obesity due to inactivity, one-tenth of one percent of the population gets off the couch, and makes the difficult journey to the marathon finish line. The challenges experienced during the extended training and the race itself force almost every marathoner to dig deeply. Most discover hidden resources which empower them to confront other challenges in life. According to several experts that I have interviewed, each back-of-the-pack marathoner influences several dozen sedentary citizens to change their health behaviors for the better.

The finishing of a marathon bestows a unique sense of worth that can last for a lifetime - regardless of finish time. We need to salute the efforts of those at the back who did not inherit the genetic material to run on a collegiate cross country team, but who inserted training into busy career and family schedules, improved their health and inspire others.

Christmas Time A Coming

With the "Advent" of Christmas, in addition to a season of preparation comes also more secular concerns. I'm working on cards, photos, letters, gifts, trips, parties, work, school events, clothes and all sorts of things that make this "The most wonderful time of the year".

Watched Father of the Bride on TV with Sarah last night. A good movie and I am starting to feel a bit like George Banks. As his wife said, no eye rolling, complaining or loosening the top button on your shirt.

Predictions made for 2009

Reviewing some notes made this January 5, 2009

What will 2009 bring?

Effective marketing and pricing will be prized

Take nothing for granted - changes are going to be expected and desired by business and customers e.g hiring, pricing, buying

Pretty much on target - maybe a little strong.
The word for 2009 is likely: FLAT. Not a big downturn, but little movement upward as well. Must keep pushing for 2010.
Three more work weeks in 2009: want to make the most of them

Reviewing the to-do's for 2009, I got them done in the nature of getting the cases resolved. But I am falling a little short on the 52 new clients goal set. So far, it's at 32. Maybe there'll be a rush but if I can get 4 more, I'll be happy and ready for 52 or more in 2010.

Friday after Thanksgiving

I went into work today, working at the court until 11 and then in the office until 3:30. Very productive and ready for Monday.

Tomorrow is my my 18 mile marathon training run starting at 0600. Down Col. Rowe 2nd St. Trail, over to Chase Tower and Bentsen Tower and up parking garage. Down to the airport, over to 10th and to 2nd and then back up 7 miles to home. I'm ready.

Happy Thanksgiving

It is Thursday Nov. 26 and the U.S. Thanksgiving. We've got Susan's parents here for the day or two and dinner is about to get cooking by yours truly. I've followed our tradition by getting the meat already prepared from the local BBQ joint, Rudy's. In Houston we used to get it at a place called T Bone Tom's which I understand was recently featured on Guy Fieri's show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Pretty amazing of all the places in Houston they'd find that one, but its a good place.
With a captive audience, I'm trying a few new recipes. I'm going to use my new fryer and make sweet potato fries at home. Hope some will enjoy but ... we'll see. It's good to be the cook.

I've got to do a little (little) work tomorrow but over the weekend, I hope to
get the Christmas cards started
get the outside Christmas lights hung
do an 18 mile marathon training run (did a 6 mile turkey trot today)
watch UT beat Texas A&M tonight
see the movie The Blind Side (good book BTW)
play 9 holes of golf

That way, I'll be ready for Monday, next week and next weeekend.

200+ Miles Saturday

Friday afternoon I rented a Harley Davidson Street Glide for a day. I picked it up at 4:00 from the dealership. There are new owners, Gene and Bobby. Bobby is a local attorney I know a little. Kind of a glamorous business to get into, like owning a restaurant. Lots of inventory and employees.

It was raining slightly and getting dark so I went straight home Friday. Saturday, I went for a run of 9 miles and then met Tom, his son Mark & Jeff and we went to pick up a 5th but he had been out late and was in no riding shape. From McAllen we headed east to Raymondville where we had breakfast at a little cafe, Casa Blanca. Amazing the places you go into on a motorcycle that you'd never otherwise stop in. The waitress was very nice and the food was good and cheap. Afterwards we headed east to Port Mansfield. I had never been there. Its kind of a dead end right in to the bay. Some house and commercial sites there but very small. After a break there we came back down a road I had ridden my bicycle on, FM 1420. That is where we had to stop due to high wind in the Jalapeno 100 in 2008. I saw the little church we were at.

Going further, we stopped at Camp Perry which is the local Boy Scout camp. It was a nice setup right on the arroyo. Tom is very active in the scouts (both he and his son were Eagle Scouts/Order of the Arrow) so we were able to go in the OA Leader room where Tom showed me his "Wood Badge" which he called the Ph.D. of scouting. There was a camp going on so people were there. We also met Pete who is the camp director.

My scout history was not so illlustrious. We moved when I was in junior high. I had been active in the Cub Scouts and Webelos, but going to a new Boy Scout troop, I never quite fit in and lost interest. Never even made it to Tenderfoot rank and only earned one merit badge (in Music!). You earned several badges by going to scout camp but I never made it there.

After the camp, Tom asked if I had ever been to Dirty Al's in South Padre. "No"... "Well we've got to go there then!" Off we went, and it was worth it. The fried shrimp were as good as promised. Excellent. At this time it was 3:30 so time to head back. I got the motorcycle back at 5:00 p.m. and it was a long day of riding. When I got home, I was not able to stay up and watch the Longhorn game. Out by 8:00 p.m Susan said.

Today I was at home mostly. We got the backyard trimmed and cleaned up the beds. It looks good. It was a nice day so I washed the car and went to the driving range in preparation for my golf game tomorrow at the redesigned Brackenridge Park in San Antonio. I'm looking forward to see how they fixed up one of my favorite courses of all.

Thursday Nov. 19

Today was a productive day getting into the office relatively early. The work I've been doing to get ready for the holiday has been beneficial. Now it seems like I am waiting for things to happen. At least I've already done the work to get to this waiting part. Marie came in a bit late (she's not feeling 100%) but that was OK. I think she is mildly surprised to see what kind of boss that I am. "Treat people the way you'd like to be treated" - works every time.

This evening, I worked on my guitar playing. I was looking at a new guitar the other day but it seems like the ones I have work just fine. Talked with my friend Paul and he was telling me about going to a guitar show (like a gun show/swap) in Arlington so maybe I'll make it up there next year.

Feeling sick

I think I'm coming down with a cold so I'm trying to keep well rested today. I was supposed to get up early to run but it got cancelled and I used the extra 2 hours to sleep. We had two trials in court today and then I went to the end of a seminar. After my orthdontist appointment I thought that the 73 degree weather deserved some outside time. So I went the golf course late in the afternoon and got 9 holes in, shooting 43. I finished as the sun was going down and it reminded me of many similar golf games when I was in high school and college. It is always nice to see the sun set when you are outside.

I figured the fresh air would do me well. I hope to rest up again tonight and feel better tomorrow.

Tuesday Nov. 17

The week is clipping by. I did receive a check from a new client today so I've got some new work to do. I was at the court today and the day went by pretty quickly. I attended a seminar at the McAllen Chamber of Commerce on internet marketing and enjoyed it. I had a bit of experience with the subject having paid many $$$$s over the year for different web sites that never quite lived up to promise.

Highlight of the day was the call to Shadow Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas. I decided that I would shoot for the stars on my one round out there. Who knows when I might go back? Its already been nearly 6 years.

So I decided to make the call. I spoke to Joy who unfortunately told me that Thursday Dec. 31 was reserved for the high rollers. I was under the impression that golf was only available Mon-Thurs. I inquired about Monday but told her I'd have to check our flight departure. She suggested calling back later about Thursday and then also suggested that Sunday morning would likely be slow and that the chance was best for me then. She thought that everyone would be partied out by Sunday morning. She said the weekday rule was just a guide.

So I was really pleased I had called early and made plans to call back Dec. 1 to check on a tee time on Sunday Jan. 3, 2010. The round is expensive but it should be worth it, since it includes limo transportation to/from the course, cart, forecaddy and food and drink. Can't wait to get a chance to play this top 50 course in the USA

Rock N Roll 2009 San Antonio

I completed the half marathon in San Antonio today. I think my time was 2:20. I ran with my friend Tom and guided him in to his first half. He was pretty happy at the end especially when he sprinted ahead of me. He seems to go in waves, alternately running smoothly but with some bouts of tough breathing.

Several highlights were:
Good start organization
Ran right by the Alamo
Interesting course
Good weather
Seeing his family on the course
PF Changs afterwards as a race sponsor: lettuce wraps, wonton, dessert, fruit infused water.
Quick pickup by his wife Karen.

I stayed at his home on Saturday night and we had fun having dinner and then playing the guitar. We had some good conversations - I guess I'm at the point when I appreciate the honest approach.

Saturday I had a nice golf game with Dan. We actually ran into our mutual friend Tim who joined us. Tim used to live in Harligen but now lives in San Antonio. The course Fair Oaks Ranch was a really good one. Reminded me of the Riverside Golf Course in Austin where I spent my formative years. I played pretty well: 46-42 and gave
Dan a good game on the back 9.

Friday the Bishops Golf Tournament was a success. After we finished the older guys hit the hotel about 7:00 p.m and were done: "Goodnight!". I was not ready for a night watching tv so I changed and went out for a drive, a milkshake and a late movie. I saw "Couples Retreat" which I enjoyed, despite a quick snooze in the middle.

Thursday Nov 12

Its been a busy day at work getting ready to head out of town for 3 days. Friday I leave for San Antonio at 0600 so no time for anything (even a cup of coffee) in the morning. I'm playing in the Bishop's Golf Tournament at Canyon Springs (supposed to be a nice course). I'm staying in a local hotel Friday night. Saturday, I've arranged a golf game with a fellow attorney Dan at Fair Oaks Ranch in Boerne. If the course is anything like the house I visited there (see August Triathlon post), it should be top notch.

Saturday night I'm staying with my friend Tom and his family at his fine home in Terrell Hills. Then he and I are running the San Antonio 13.1 mile half marathon Sunday morning. I'll be running under the name "Karen" his wife who signed up but can't run this year. My friend/training partner Kristi will be there also, so I hope we can all run together.

Sunday Nov. 8

Today its been a nice day as has the previous few weeks. I have been looking for reasons to get outside. Today I decided to hit a bucket of golf range balls. When I got home I decided to wash the car. So now my swing is grooved for next Friday (Bishops Golf Tournament in San Antonio) as well as the follow up round with fellow attorney Dan (tenative) on Satuday. I'll be up there for the Rock N Roll San Antonio half marathon (13.1 miles). I'll be running as Karen, my friend Tom's wife who signed up but hurt her foot. I've beeen looking for ways to keep the running fun - an alias will be a good one.

Friday night we attended the Chamber of Commerce banquet honoring hospital general counsel Jim Darling. That was a nice event, although there did not seem to be as many people as in years past. I guess chamber participation mirrors the economy. Memorial had their last regular season game and had to win by 10 points to make the last playoff spot. There were ahead 21-0 at halftime but lost 24-21. So the football season is over for this year. Wait Til Next Year!

Saturday, I participated in the 2nd Annual Ride for Breast Cancer, a local cycling event put on by Texas Oncology and Team McAllen. I did the 40 mile ride. I had not riden that distance in some time so it was a challenge especially toward the end, but I got it done. I was pooped when I got home and took a long nap. Sarah went out in the evening so I cooked shrimp & grits at home based on a good recipe. That was a good end to the day.

Reading a good book called Go Like Hell which is about the Ford-Ferrari rivalry at Le Mans in the mid 60s . Interesting to read about event that happened right about when I was born!

Getting Better

I've been working on a new approach at work. Not only have I been recommending people to do various things (some which they don't want to do), I've started to add about three sentences on "Why" it is a good idea. Amazing how people start to listen when you list the proverbial three good reasons.

I tried it today. I've been working on a hard to settle case. Once I finally cracked the code, I quickly moved to send the documents to get signed. Along with three good reasons why they should sign. Hopefully I'll have them all back tomorrow or the next day. Best of all, it's bill time!

We've had some great weather lately. Its made for beautiful sunsets as well with the time change and the sun setting about 6:15 or so.

Tomorrow we're going to see Sarah's picture she had taken professionally after getting her braces off. The photographer is very nice. We're looking to get a family photo done soon as well.

I got the invite to go another trip, this one to Chile. It looks like it might be more trip that I'm ready for at this time, but it is fun to look at flights to Punta Arenas Chile. The area of Patagonia is very beautiful according to the pictures.

The Terminators fantasy football is going great. I'm doing better than ever and spending less time on it. Last night we gathered at Jorge's beautiful new house (complete with outdoor kitchen, projection TV, professional kitchen, wine cellar and rooftop patio) to watch the Monday night game. Livin' Large!

Halloween 2009

We had a memorable Halloween, hosting a surprise party (15th birthday) for Lauren. She came over with her parents, dressed up to go trick or treating. Imagine her surprise to find a houseful of friends. All the kids dressed up nicely and they had a good time with pizza, chips and sodas.

Our friends Ronnie & Bridget came over with their 2 and 1 year old children so it was lots of fun playing with them. Reminds me of the old days. You forget what its like to pick up a kid and toss them around! So light!

Today started the end of daylight savings so the fall back gave an nice extra hour of sleep. I played in the church band and we really rocked the last song, Trading My Sorrows (Yes Lord/Yes Lord/Yes Lord/Amem!).

It was such a nice day I wanted to do something outside. So after I met Susan and Sarah for lunch I went to play 9 holes. I hit a bucket of balls first and then walked, carrying my bag. I had an eventful day - could not hit the longer clubs off the tee without getting into trouble, so I hit a lot of irons. Good time.

I also saw the Michael Jackson movie THIS IS IT which was excellent - 4 stars. A great combination of movie, play and reality show. Even if you're not a Michael fan, you'd like it. And since everyone likes Michael Jackson, it was really good.

Quiet at Home

I am home this evening. Susan has gone to Washington DC for 2 days, returning Wed night late. So it is Sarah and me. I picked her up at school early to go to the orthodontist. But it was a different visit - closing out. Dana the office manager gave us the before and after pictures and the plaster molds. Amazing how S has changed since the 6th grade. She commented she thought she looks better now (don't we all?)

As usual at school none of the kids seemed to be in class. Found out that the IB seniors (only 42) finished some test early so they were all hanging out waiting for the next class. Lots of freedom there.

I expressed my freedom by parking in the superintendant's spot. I thought it was silly - how often could be come there? Turns out, more than I thought since they have various meetings there. Lucked out this time - perhaps a good way to meet him?!

Quick update

Sunday I participated in a screenplay reading for a potential movie. A former client of mine is now writing a screenplay and he not only had consulted with me on it while writing but also asked me to read the part of the lawyer "Conny". So that was fun. We started about 2 and ended about 4:30. He got a good, diverse group of people together.

I thought it was a good effort from everyone. Now I'm excited to give my feedback and see what happens next. Financing, production, marketing, I'm thinking positive. I'm already picturing myself at the premiere!

Gotta Love the Aggies!

From SI.com - Aggie Yell Leader Casey Schaeffer

Saturday Oct 24

Today I went for a 14 mile training run for the Houston Marathon. Left at 0600 with friend Kristi and it went fast. The weather was nice. On the return loop she needed to use the restroom so we were right by the Embassy Suites. On the way out, she suggested we run up the ramps of the parking garage. So that added a hill to the workout and kept the boredom factor (more prevalent when running along) to a minimum. Finished about 0900.

Last Thursday former President Bill Clinton was in town and so we attended the Clinton Foundation fundraiser at the Cantu Residence. Even Bill joked at what a big house it was. We got our picture taken with him due to Susan's outstanding fundraising efforts. Someone joked she should do it full time.

He gave a talk outside in a familiar manner:

We had a nice time. We went with friend Todd & Elena (just married this year) and Brian who we had drive us all in his Suburban. Parking was limited.

Friday, Sarah was not feeling well in the morning so she stayed home from school and went at 11:30. Nice to have flexibility with the IB program. Afterwards our friend Marissa had a luncheon for her birthday that I was invited to. As one of the few men in a roomful of beautiful women (including of course Susan) I was quite the charmer/the charmed life. That was fun.

Friday night was the Memorial v. McAllen High rivalry game. Lots of offense and little defense made for a high scoring game. Memorial scored a touchdown to go ahead with a minute left. Then McHi ran back the kickoff for a touchdown to go ahead. With about 10 seconds left Memorial took the kickoff and ran it back, fumbling, lateraling, running toward the end zone for the winning TD with no time left when... he was tacked at the 4 yard line. Game over :(

Great game though.

Tomorrow I am participating in a screenplay reading for a potential movie. My friend James wrote this screenplay this year after some consultation with me about the lawyer role. So he is getting a group together to read it aloud together. I'm reading for the lawyer, "Connie" (because he's a con). Kind of Body Heat meets the Bucket List.

Baby Back

My car arrived today from San Antonio with a new ABC system (pretty much). New hose, new pump, new fluid, new valves. ABC stands for Active Body Control, or basically a hydraulic active suspension that can raise/lower the car as well as balance it out in sharp corners and redirect power to avoid skids and spins.

The driver Mario said it was a pleasure to drive and that he left right on time and found the McAllen police station easily with his GPS system. I was glad I had cleaned out the rental car, gassed it up and got some cash for a tip for which he seemed appreciative. He took off in the Ford and I was quite happy to have my M-B back, hence my "baby back/baby back/baby back" (think Chili's commercial).

I am certainly glad that I bought the extended warranty to cover the many expensive repairs as well as the long term rental car. My kind of wager. I'll leave the Vegas wagers to others.

Monday Oct 19

I was in Dallas these past few days arriving Sunday. I changed my flight to play a round of golf with attorney Steve G. who we had been talking about playing together. It was a nice round of 5 people. We started in the dawn hour at 7:04 am which was particularly early after staying up til 1 am to pick up Sarah from the Pigskin Marching Competition (where the band earned a top score of 1).

I arrived in Dallas about 8 pm and met Jeff for dinner. He brought in an older woman... who was his mother who I had not seen since we were in high school. It was great to catch up with her. She had moved to Pennsylvania for some years to look after her father, who was a Brewmaster (what an interesting job!). After his death, Jeff moved her to Dallas and she seems pretty happy there. She has travelled to a lot of cool places, flown over the Himalayas, been to the Pyramids, the Gallapos Islands and many others.

As it turned out Jeff had a rare week off from work so he agreed to play golf with Randy and Eric and me on Monday. I went by the local office of S-W and after a business meeting went to the golf course, the Tribute.

The course was based on many different British Isles courses. It was a links style course but being on the shores of Lake Lewisville, was a great location. I thought the holes were well done. I particularly like the last 3, which were from Turnberry, and St. Andrews. The last hole, patterned after the 18th at St. Andrews was memorable. Jeff drove the green of this short par 4 and made a 6 foot putt for a rare eagle 2. He was very happy about that. I had a good time on a nice course with very nice weather the whole day.

Afterwards, Jeff suggested we go for steak. I recommended Texas de Brazil and he was up for it. Great dinner! It was not too crowded during the week and we had a nice time. It was really a special occasion for we had not played golf together in several years. Who knows when we'll do it again?

Monday night I went to my friend Bill's house in Highland Village, Texas where he recently moved. I enjoyed seeing their home. It was very up to date and modern, high ceilings, granite counters in kitchen, nice courtyard. Today Tuesday we went to the Corner Bakery where he has become a regular. I left about 9:15 for the airport and barely made the flight, the 2nd to last person to get on. But I made it.

We are getting a new air conditioner. Of course, when I go out of town, things tend to go wrong. The car is coming back tomorrow from San Antonio after 4 weeks in the shop. Welcome home!

Finally a weekend home

Back in McAllen I did enjoy this weekend home. Friday night we had the Memorial v. Rowe High School football game. I went with my friend John S. whose son Alex is also in the band. We enjoy the games (particularly the band) together. Memorial scored with a nice pass play right away and won 63-33.

Early today I went for a 11 mile run (at 0500) with my running friend Kristi. We had to go a bit early because I had agreed to assist our church in some painting starting at 0745. We had a group of 6 and went to another local church to assist. That church has an aging population and doesn't really have a group like ours to assist. So we painted 7 door different colors. Got a lot of paint on my hands.

I joked that I was doing my community service. "Paying your fines?" asked Father Philip. I had a good laugh since we give out so much community service in court.

I got home in time to watch the end of the UT/OU game which the Horns won. I dozed off and slept a good part of the afternoon. Then I got up because Susan and I were going to dinner and then the Pigskin Marching Contest which the Memorial band has been working towards all year. Dinner was good and it was fun to be together. We got some coffee afterwards and drove the 20 minutes west to La Joya. The band did great, weather was cool and the band scored a top mark of 1. So everyone was very happy. They are partying til 0100 tonight.

Tomorrow I'm playing golf early and then heading to Dallas for a business meeting and a business round of golf at The Tribute

For the Love

I have just returned from Houston for the funeral of my brother in law Rick Ryan. There were many questions asked this past week, the most common being:

Now was this your sister's husband?

Rick was married to my wife's sister Janet from 1981 to 2004. Together they had three children. As I like to say, this isn't the Royal Family. Once you're in, you stay in.

He died Thursday October 1 after suffering a stroke that previous Monday. I went to Houston on Oct 2-4 and had a good visit with my nephews, two of his sons Damon and Joel. Damon's wife of 12 years Lisa was there as well

That Saturday we made arrangments with the local Addison Funeral Home for cremation. That Sunday, Damon and Joel and I took a break to attend the Houston Texans v. Oakland Raiders NFL game. We all enjoyed that, particularly the good club levels seats I obtained from one of my clients in McAllen.

Sunday night I drove over to San Antonion where I spent Monday in San Antonio for car repair and made the most of the trip with some good business meetings. Tueday through Thursday I had municipal court and Thursday was a very fast paced day to catch a 1:55 pm flight back to Houston. I saw Rick's other 2 children nephew Zachary and niece Olivia that night.

Friday October 9 was the funeral date. As if in the movies a cold rainy front blew in. More questions: will the funeral be in the rain? I thought that this could not possibly be the first time it had rained at the cemetery.

The service was held in a Committment Shelter which is were the services are in the Houston National Cemetery. No graveside ceremonies. The shelter was about 20' x 20', open on 3 sides, with benches and also a pedestal for the coffin or in this case the ashes which were covered by the US flag. The local VFW performed the honors. A local chaplain said a few Bible verses and Psalms. I spoke for about 2 minutes for the family.

We all got together that night including Janet for dinner at El Palenque for about 25 people. That is a good local spot that Joel and I have gone to several times. Everyone enjoyed the night out.

Saturday I stayed with my parents. I did a good marathon training run that morning and had lunch at the club with my mother and her friend Sue, who was very interesting having just returned from Macchu Picchu in Peru and the Galapogas Islands and Ecuador. Those are all places I'd like to go. I caught a flight back that afternoon late and made it back just in time to see the Memorial Band perform.

In Training

This weekend I went on my first real long run for the marathon training. It was probably 11 miles +/- . It took 2.5 hours which is what the real measure was. I ran into a fellow runner whose name was Neil. It was enjoyable to meet someone also training and we ran together for about half the time.

Today I am still a bit sore in the legs (can't understand why!:) I did catch up on some rest this afternoon.

Also I insisted that Sarah drive to and from her friend Candace's house this afternoon. Going there she did great. On the way back coming to our street, she came in pretty fast to a turn and... my life flashed before my eyes. She managed to squeal around going left but that curb came pretty fast toward us.

Fortunately I kept calm and had her drive around the block and come back and do the turn the right way. Learn by doing.

I told my father about this and he said "I've been there".

My tuxedo history

Saturday afternoon I went to purchase a new tuxedo. We had a black tie event Sat. night to go to and and afterward the Museum Collage party next month so I figured the old one from 1998 was due to be replaced.

It got me thinking about my first tuxedo which I purchased in 1984. I had to special order the pants, size 31, from Reynolds-Penland in Austin, Texas. That store of course is no longer - at the corner of W. 24th and Guadalupe, I think its a Gap now.

For the first few years, I had this red plaid tie/cummerbund which I wore year-round. Looking back it was probably more Christmas-ish but that is what I started with. I ended up getting a black bow tie and cummerbund (which I think I bought at a resale shop). That was in 1987 and I just replaced the set on Saturday. Interestingly the new bow tie was a little bigger. Things change over 20 years! The new cummerbund was much nice - more substance to it, heavier material.
The new shirt was a nice update.

The second tux was purchased in 1998 in Houston at Jos. A. Bank. I remember my salesman Eric as being a nice person. I purchased the shawl (rounded) collar which was a bit more preppy/Eastern which was desirable as a Washington & Lee student. It has been a few places as well such as my sister Elizabeth's wedding in 2002 but mainly served the purpose of being able to look my best at the "Black Tie Optional" parties which women love to get dressed up for. A man who know what to wear is a prize. I also enjoyed wearing it to several stag dinners at the Houston Country Club with my dad in the 90s.

The old style wing tip shirt (my first one) has also gone the way of rumble seats. As time went by, the tip which could be worn any way at first were "always supposed to tucked in". Now I don't think you could find one easily.

Shoes: Originally I wore a very fine pair of black Luchesse ostrich boot with my tuxedo. You can imagine what those preppies in Virginia thought of them. They did look good though and were memorable. Eventually I got a pair of black loafers and then a pair of wing tip shoes. I've never had a pair of patent leather shoes or the bow ties slipons favored in New York. In fact at our wedding in 1990, one the rules I laid down was "no plastic shoes".

At our wedding, I did not wear my own tuxedo but rather rented the white tie and tails which I felt very sharp wearing. That was July 14, 1990. They say you need to wear those to a State Dinner at the White House. If (WHEN!) I go, I'll plan to buy my own. In fact we saw Alonzo Saturday night and he was talking about going to a State Dinner where he sat at the table with the King of Spain as well as Meg Ryan.

I still have and use the cuff links and studs I purchased in Alvin-Dennis in Lexington, Virginia in 1984. Basic black. When I was back in Lexington in 2007 I told Mr. Alvin Carter that I still had and used them, and he seemed pleased. He did inquire what happened to my size 31 waist though.

Second Day Back

Still working to catch up from a week's vacation. The messages have at least been listened to. THe mail has been opened. The office tidied up a bit. But I have not been there too much.

Yesterday was a funeral for Judy Badders, wife of Father John. She had Parkinson's Disease but that was something she had lived with. But she got some type of infection that led to blood poisoning and she died a few days later.

Surprising, Cecily came to the funeral. A surprise since she had a big falling out with our church and Fr. John (who she worked for before working for me). In short after 7 years of bitterness and anger the two reconciled. It was a powerful thing to witness up close and I am glad to say I've been encouraging it for a long time.

It reminded me of a reconcilation I had with my friend Joe. An important thing in my life. That's certainly something to be proud of. Anger is not part of God's plan for anyone.

Today I had to take the M-B to San Antonio to get checked out under warranty. I'm glad we bought the extended warranty. The ABC light had come on (a sophistication suspension monitors system which counterbalances the car, lowers the height, corrects overspin, etc.). The local mechanic thought it might be a defective sensor since it checked OK on his computer. But I thought it best to have to fixed under warranty rather that start looking for things that might go wrong.

So I have a rental loaner car today. I may go back to pick up the car on Wed. afternoon or if not then Friday afternoon. 500 mile drive up and back today to San Antonio.

Sugarland - Hidalgo TX -09/09/09

When we went to New Orleans last May we wanted to see Sugarland at the Jazz Fest. That didn't work out so we saw them locally.

What a great show! Matt Nathanson opened with a solo set which finished with Brandon Bush and Kristian Bush. They are great musicians. Then Billy Currington did a nice show. You forget how many hits he's had in a short time. "Good Directions", "Don't" and so on.

Sugarland was really good. It was impressive that both of them Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush play many different instruments and differenty styles of music. Good songs were

Everyday America
Genevieve
Baby Girl
Stay
Joey
and so on

I didn't write the setlist down but just sat back to enjoy

Sunday Sept 20 - Home

I ended up staying up late last night catching up on the blog. I therefore was a little late for church but glad to be back. Afterwards, I picked up some movies and filled up the car with gas and settled in at home to catch up on laundry and NFL football.

Susan and Sarah came back from the Island (hosptial charity fishing tournament) & we got a sandwich for lunch at Which Wich. Now Sarah's doing homework and Susan is napping and I'm watching more football.

Not have internet access, I was away from my fantasy football but I am back now. I've got a nice lead with the 54 point performance of Chris Johnson (TEN)

Saturday Sept 19 - Travel Day

Up at 0400 to catch Aero Republica flight to Panama City from MDE. As appropriate, Luis Antonio drove us to the airport. O's mom got up to see us off. Panama was an interesting airport, kind of a crossroads for Carribbean, USA, and South America. Very flat and tropical. Panama used to be part of Colombia before the USA stirred up a revolution.

Continental fight 873 to IAH was about 3.5 hours. Customs took a while to get through. After clearing through we had a long layover. I was ready for a little time and so I arranged to me O at the gate. I stopped at a shop and bought some shoes I saw - figured I might not have the chance to get them later. I had another lunch at Pappasitos - chicken wrap. I picked up USA Today, perfect to catch up on sports, movies, weekly news. We got back to MFE about 7 and I was home at 7:45 p.m. in time to watch the UT/Texas Tech game. I went to get a hamburger and fries. Welcome back!

Friday Sept 18 - La Giroconda

Up at 0815. Luis Antonio coming at 0900 to take me to the Da Vinci Exhibit at the Casa Madero de Plaza Mayor. We left with Luis and his daughter Luisa. I thought she was going with us, but she just drove us to the Metro. We got on what they called the Metrorcarril rail and then rode to the Metrocable which was a gondola ride up the mountain. Up the mountain is a poor area, lots of shacks made on the side of the mountain. But the cable gives access to transportation to the many people who live there. So its a pretty progressive idea.

Luis is like me. He likes to strike up conversations with others. He talked up everyone in the cable cars, 15 minutes at a time, up and down :) The Metro was very clean - there were ladies dressed in white uniforms cleaning up.

After a ride through the Metro ("Riding on the Metro..."), we ended up at the Da Vinci exhibit. It was an interesting collection of replicas for of course, things like the Mona Lisa or the Last Supper are not traveling items. There were a number of wooden invention machines that he came up with. Some were pretty ingenious like the spiral energy or the circular hammer (hard to describe. Many of them had circular energy transferred to linear energy.

The Last Supper was a good description. It is a mural about 8 M long x 4 M high and there is a door underneath. It is located in Milan. Gilbert said he had been there.

The Mona Lisa was a good exhibit. It has been analyzed more than nearly any other work I can think of. For example, did you know there are mountains in the background? Likely an amalgam of various places, no one knows. Also the position of her hands looks like she has six fingers. And did you know she has no eyebrows or eyelashs?

La Giroconda is "Mona Lisa" in Italian. It was purchased/commission by a French king, hence the reason it is in the Lourve in Paris.

The exhibit was neat to see in Spanish. Renaissance is Renacimiento. La Cena Ultimo. El Hombre de Vitruvio (Vitruvius Man).

We then had lunch at a local cafe where the Cazuela (frijoles) were good. We did a little shopping at the bike shop and Luisa picked us up. We had dinner at home and Luis Guillermo's family cam over to say goodbye before we had to leave early the next morning.

Thursday Sept 17

Up early at 0615 for cycling. Rained all the way there. I was concerned about riding in such heavy rain, but like going hunting, you don't know what the weather will be like at the spot until you are there. As on cue the rain stopped when we got to the ready point and we rode for about 1.5 hours. Some climbs were pretty good but manageable. We went through the town of El Retiro and it was pretty quaint.

We had breakfast thereafter. There are two kinds of arepa, white corn and yellow corn (choclo'). The yellow is better I think. Also had chorizo which is dried, much different than here. Also finally had a good cup of tinto (coffee black).

Fruits and flowers here are amazing, Trees with white leaves (Guayacan) are very pretty. I'd have taken a picture but they are located here and there and we did not stop.

That afternoon, friend Samuel picked us up to have lunch with a group of friends. We went to Puro Peru, which I was happy to see since I had found out about Peruvian cuisine. Counting me there were 6 professional men, all about 50 (I'm the baby). One of them Jaime was an attorney, fluent in English.

We had several dishes. The ceviche was awesome, big chunks of fish. Also have a limonada, which is a fresh limeade. Fried shrimp, arroz Peruvana which was better than the other night. Excellent. There was a filet of fish with a good sauce. There was a beef dish, very spicy. Dessert were a pudding "like a Milky Way" as Samuel said, and a good cheesecake. We ordered several dishes and passed them around. Good sample. Excellent place, all open aired just like many of the restaurants here (no need for air conditioning).

That afternoon we were back in the apartment. Gilbert helped me with some Spanish. Difference btwn Espada (sword) and Espalda (back). At the Botero Exhibit, we had seen pictures of the Virgin Mary with a sword painted on. Gilbert said this was to signify Luke 2 "when sorrow will pierce your heart like a sword". I read the verse in the Sagrada Biblia in the apartment.

Later O said we were going to visit a young girl where he was going to give her a medical check as a favor. WE went to this nice apartment and met her mother C and then the girl game in. She was 13 years old. Oscar said she was OK, recommended that she monitor what she eats, no big problems.

I found out on the way over that one of the reason's O wanted to go there was to talk to the mother, which he did privately.

Then we went to H's apartment .
The apartment they lived in was out of a movie. It was on the 15th floor of one of the higher ares of the surrounding mountains. The balcony goes all around the full floor. There was probably more balcony space outside than most apartments have space inside. Three bedrooms plus a nice study with a glass desk. In the master bath, the toilet and shower were hidden behind frosted glass doors. CD's hidden behind TV. Closets hidden behind wall decorations.

We had dinner which was very nice: the Aji chicken soup, salad with pears, tomatoes, and cordonis (which I called huevos pequenos, little eggs). As the server heard me say this, she couldn't help but start laughing out loud :)

We also had a chicken casserole and a tasty jugo (juice) Lula. Finished with orange sherbert with orange slices on top. There were pretty flowers in the apt. which smelled really good.

Afterwards, I ended up talking with K (en Espanol). She has a passport from Spain so it is easy for her to travel throughout European Union. H is working on getting one as well.

H liked reading business books like me. We discussed the book Outliers which we both liked a lot. He gave me some other book ideas.

The good night had to come to an end. An interesting look into other people's lives. I

Wed Sept 15

0815 Oscar banged on my door telling me to get ready for cycling. You'd think he could have just told me what time to get up and I'd do it but he's the kind of person who likes to be in charge. As a result he has complimented me several time on being easy going. So we're a good pair. This has definitely been a trip of following along, kind of like being a kid again - someone else makes the plans and pays this bill. There has really not been anything to pay for.

After breakfast of Arepa con huevo (the local version of a tortilla with a fried egg inside, we went went to the Rio Negro area to go cycling. Rio Negro is the "county" if you will where the airport is near. The cycling was not as steep as last time but still good climbs. Some rain but good weather, ususally about 20C (75F).

We had lunch at the apartment and O went to visit a friend so it was nap time again. I thought perhaps I should do something but then figured just rest. There is a lot of security in the buildings (24 hr doormen monitoring all coming and going) so I figured they'd probably not like me just walking around unescorted.

At 1600 I went shopping with O at EXITO which is the Wal-Mart of Colombia. Looks just like it, everything from produce on one side to washing machines on the other. Lots of multinational brands, Coca Cola, Nestle, Kelloggs, Bimbo. O bought a supply of local things. He even liked to buy his underwear there (I let me do that shopping in private). We bought some produce, esp. a tart little berry (can't remember the name).

That night we went to Luis Guillermo's and Liliana apt. which was right across the street for dinner. We had the sopa (Aji) which is apparently common to Bogota. Then the people from dinner Sat. night came over and they had a business meeting about buying a ranch together. I went to play Wii with the boys Sebastian and Santi and another boy Miguel, Moises' son. We played FIFA 09 which was very realistic esp. after seeing the soccer game live Sunday. We also played Wii Resort which had bowling (fun), archery (fun) tennis (not too good at it) and table tennis (terrible). It made you want to go play for real.

The 2 boys go to the same German school as Ignacio's daughter Maria Camila. We had fun playing - the international language.

Tuesday Sept 15

0610 flight from the smaller Medellin airport EOH to Monteria (MTR) in the north part of the country, in the state of Cordoba. We took a turboprop over the mountains. The airport was like somethink from the Amazing Race. We got picked up by Moises in his Nissan truck and then picked up another person Juan Camilo. After a breakfast in a little cafe, we drove to the finca (farm). It was about 20 km outside of town and then 30 km down a red dirt road. We were out there!

At the place there was a nice bunkhouse. It was like the hunting lodge (smaller, less fancy) in Abasolo, Mexico we went to. We went out to the arena where horses were mounted and ready for us to ride. We went on a 2.5 hour horseback ride to see the cattle. That was pretty neat even if I was not quite dressed for it. But I enjoyed it. We rode through canals (forded through) and in genenal went over various terrain. I got very wet (from feets in water and water kicked up while riding) and the others thought that was pretty funny.

Then lunch. Pasta and spaghetti sauce. I later heard the cook had been reading the recipe all morning. Then I found out we would not be staying but would be driving the 6 hours back to Medellin. We took a short nap and set out about 3:30pm.

I rode with Juan Fernando who worked for Moises. We had a good talk back and forth. I got better at listening. It makes a difference when it is just the two of us.

On the way back it was a tough ride. Rained the whole way, dark, 1 hour on dirt road, twisty mountains road all the way (remember the mountains we flew over in the morning) and passing lots of cars around curves and going fast. And the check engine light came on! We got things fixed with a little help. We got back at 0130 Wed morning. What a day!

First Communion

Sara and Ana Maria. See how the location was open air. Most all restaurants there were like that. Weather is so good, not hot and not cold makes it very nice.

Monday Sept 14

Oscar left early for interviews at the medical school. I was planning to go to the Museo Antioquia with mother Alicia, her sister Gloria, Luis Antonio and Gilbert. At the museum (we drove there) the main exhibit was of the Colombian artist Botero. He specialized in oversized subjects with interesting details such as flies buzzing around or volcanoes erupting in the background.

Also little pieces such as bullets in the air in "Death of Pablo Escobar" or droplets of blood "Sufrimiento del Cristo".

The big subjects ususally had smaller other features, like small breasts or small feet. Also the Colombian flag was either there in a small way or the colors looked like the flag colors.

After we went to the Jardin Botanico and had lunch at a place In Situ. It was an awesome spot. Excellent. People were there it looked like they came there from work, not tourists.

The gardens were pretty but it was pretty crowded with school kids. Pretty orchids we saw. Also this cool plant called La Lincona which is kind of like a bird of paradise. We also saw 2 iguanas high in a tree.

The fruits and flowers of Colombia were awesome. Beautiful and tasty things that I've never seen. Very unusual. They were for sale on the sides of the road or wheeled around in big carts. So plentiful. I wish I could remember all the names.

Hooters of Medellin

Sunday Sept 13

Up early at 0600 for cycling. I was completely out of it on the drive over there. We stopped for breakfast and I had to walk around outside to try and clear my head. This place was El Ranchito near the airport. After breakfast and coffee I felt much better. O joked that I would lose breakfast on the ride but I figured he was just being macho - he'd probably say that to Lance Armstrong.

We started the ride with Tio Luis following in the SAG car. We rode w Cousin Carlos also (dad of Sara from First Communion yesterday and Luis's son in law).

Glad we had the SAG. This climb was like going up the mountain to Angel Fire. UP and up and up. Very steep. I thought of quitting but I had breath and was able to pedal steadily. The bike I was on was borrowed from O's brother in law Jorge and it was a bit small esp. when I had to stand on the pedals. So I tried to stay down. I made it up to the top.

Then it was down the mountain. Wow! Exhilirating! I got up to about 50 Km/hr without pedalling and had to ride the brakes down since there was a little wetness on the road. Figured I'd live to ride another day.

Then the ride was rolling hills into the town of La Cena and then San Antonio where we stopped at the home of Jose Ignacio & Ana Maria (from Friday) and met their 3 children

Also there were Jorge & Blanca (Jose's parents). The farm had been in the family since 1925. Rustic and nice. Very nice family. The parents only speak English to the children at home and the children go to the German school so they are tri-lingual. Why can't we do that in America?

Back to lunch with all the family at Montongo, a big restaurant with fast service. Had the house specialty, AJI, like a tortilla soup. Then back to Apt. for the obligatory nap.

Then off to soccer (futbol) game between Medellin Independiente (RED) and Nacional Antioquia (GREEN). Medellin won 3-1 and Oscar was very excited. Like a Red Sox/Yankees game, lots of fans with strong feelings. I saw Diego and Diana (Thursday) there. Both "end zones" were full of the opposing fans. Strong feelings made everyone wear neutral colors. We were in good seats (about "30 yd line") in the shade (sombra) like a bullfight (better seats in shade).
We went with brothers Hector and Luis Guillermo & his 2 sons.

After going back to the apt. O said we would go to a business meeting - might be "kind of boring."

Anything but! We went to Hooters of Medellin which could have been transplanted from any place in the US. It was in an area of restaurants called Parque Lleras. At the meeting were Rodrigo and Ana and their son Alejandro "Mac" - 12 yrs old. Also Juliana and Jorge (dueno/owner of the bike I'm riding and brother/son of Blanca).

While the adults had their business meeting Mac & I talked in perfect English (he goes to the English bilingual school called Colombus). We played games on his iTouch and had hot wings. He was like Sarah, mature for a young person. They say only children are like that - used to being around adults. The evening was a lot of fun

Saturday Sept 12

I woke up at 0800 and had huevitos revueltos (scrambled eggs) w Gilberto.

Oscar had been out but got back in a hurry (that'll be a common theme...) and was ready for bike riding. We drove towards the airport, up the mountain and stopped at a store, Caballo de Troyo, a gift store run by Nelson. We unloaded the bikes and started to ride up the mountain.

It didn't take more than a minute or two for me to get short of breath. I got pretty worried - had not experienced that altitude problem. I tried to breath in/out as best as I could and to keep going. I thought "What if I was NOT in shape?"

I found a rhythm and kept going and did OK. Then we turned around and went down (bajar). That was much faster - the reward (prometido). Oscar said he prefers to climb (subir) as it was safer/slower. I'm the opposite. We rode about an hour.

We had to go to the luncheon for the First Communion of Sara and Ana Maria. Lots of family. Like a Thanksgiving.

The father of Ana Maria is Jose Vicente, husband of Dora, O's sister. He looks German (blond hair/blue eyes). He spoke English pretty well so we talked in English.

Luis Antonio teased me a little as I ordered some "Agua" which they knew as "Water" which sounds like "Guaro" which is liquor (Whar-Oh). So when I ordered something, they'd croak "Gauro!" :)
Luis Guillermo thought that was funny. He's O's brother, and is married to Lilian and they have 2 sons, Sebastian 13 and Santiago (Santi) 10. Santi was a mother's boy, stroking his mom's hair.

I had the sotomillo which is a type of flank/ribeye steak. I had the Jugo de Fresa (strawberry juice) and also a "Canada" (Canada Dry Ginger ale). There was good service at the restaurant, San Carbon. I saw some Americans there but was happy to be doing things my way even if I am a bit lost sometimes.

Back to the apt. for a 1.5 hr nap. Not sure why I am sleeping so much. Then Oscar & I left for dinner with some friends. They were children of his former partner. He was talking about getting into the farm/cattle business with them. He talked of education, work, sacrifice. One woman there was 8 1/2 months pregnant so she was most uncomfortable on the hard chairs. The restaurant was in a nice area El Poblado and was upscale. It had 3 different types of food, steak, Italian and Peruvian (Peruvan). So of course I tried the Peruvan rice dish with seafood mixed in.

Friday Sept 11 - Medellin Colombia

Our flight left IAH Houston for BOG Bogota at midnight and it was a 5 hour flight. I took some sleep aid (benadryl) and it went pretty fast. After clearing customs, we found a place for breakfast in the airport about 0600 (things were opening up).

Diana had taken Ambien to sleep and said she felt like she was hung over. I imagine that the drug affects the same parts of the mind/body as does alcohol, so I would expect a similar withdrawal feeling. Glad I didn't have it.

We then flew by Copa Airlines to MDE (Medellin) arriving about 8:30 am. Oscar's uncle Luis Antonio met us at the airport to drive us back. I thought he was Oscar's dad at first. On the way down the mountain we saw lots of cyclists

Oscar's parents live in a high rise - very nice place. Staying there was Father Gilberto, the priest who married Oscar & Blanca in 88. He is a priest now in Stockton, CA. We had breakfast with mother Alicia and Fr. Gilberto. Gilberto suggested I get some sleep and I slept for 3 hrs.

At the apartment are 2 housekeepers, Maria Elena & Olga. Maria seemed to flirt a little - don't think she has many visitors like me :)

We went out for a drive in Oscar's 83 Mitsubishi. On the way I noticed all motorcyclists/motor scooter riders (both riders) wear ID vests and mandatory helmets with the same ID number on. Oscar said it is a response to previous violence by cyclists.

We visited Jorge and Blanca, O's wifes (also Blanca) parents. Their son's Pedro and Jose Ignacio & his wife Ana Maria came over. We went to dinner (menos Pedro) at a place Hato Viejo and had a typical Colombian dinner of rice, meat, chicharonnes, egg & beans. Lot of food. Also figs for dessert - very sweet. I was full and we went back to the apartment.

Expensive - worth it?

Nobody said that private golf was cheap. I found a list of the most expensive golf clubs to join. Interestingly Dallas National is on there. Maybe I might have to wait a bit longer for that invitation.

Of course the best way to go is as an honored guest. As America's Guest, I have enjoyed many a fine round at some of the best places around. Some things you just can't buy with money.

Top 100 Golf Courses

For years, the golf magazines have rated the "Top 100" courses. Typically they mirror where the major tournaments have been played over the years, with a bias toward East Coast/Midwest private courses.

With the advent of a course building boom there has been pressure to revise the rankings to include newer courses and also public-accessible courses. Donald Trump is an example - after he builds his "great" course, he wants it recognized as such. As a result the lists have changed quite a bit. Looking at the most recently one I saw, there was only one course in Texas, and one that has only been around for about 10 years, Dallas National. I saw it on a map and drove by on my last trip - its on the near east side of town which has not developed like the other three sides.

Also recently added Whispering Pines, a course I have played. Dad likes that one a lot. He had some "hook up" that allowed him to go there when he wanted to. Never asked exactly what the deal was - figured I didn't need to know. Also off the beaten track - 2 hours north of Houston.

There are several blogs out there about quests to play all 100 top courses. While I don't have that quest, I have played some good ones. In the future, I'll describe some of the places I have golfed.

Labor Day 2009

We returned from South Padre Island today. Got back home about 12:45 pm. Glad to not have to drive back to Houston like the Wren family.

We enjoyed our weekend with them. Saturday we had an mid afternoon lunch at Tom & Jerry's. Then we rested through dinner and we went to the store and fixed a lite late dinner at home, watching some movie on TV.

Sunday we went to the beach and had fun. The weather was mild with it being a little overcast. At 3:00 the girls went to Schlitterbahn. We were able to drop them off and they stayed til 7:00. I said that it was nice they were old enought to do that. Nicole said "Finally!" Then we tried to see a movie but there was no 9:30 show after all so we came home and stayed up late.

Today after getting home I did go to the movies, seeing "Extract" which I liked. It was about a middle aged married guy and his life at home and at work. So I could relate to a lot of it. Then I went to the store, fixed dinner, washed Susan's car and it is now nearly bed time. After napping each day for the past 3 days, I need my sleep!

Busy before Holiday Weekend

The Friday before Labor Day is always a busy day. When no one is working on Monday and fewer people that Friday before, there is a rush to finish things.

I did attend a mediation today and settled a case which I had been working on for more than 2 years. I took the case on a pro bono basis (free) after a request from Dr. Carlos who used to employ this person. He suggested she talk to me and I took the case. It was a family law case: this couple had married in 1988, divorced in 2002 and then got back together enough to have a 4th child outside of marriage in 2004. So we had over 20 years of problems to deal with, many years of unpaid child support and no child support for the newest child.

Long story short, we came up with numbers to resolve the money and came up with a solution as to who the youngest child would live with. Glad to come to a resolution.

Another good part was being able to use a mediator friend. This person had been a local attorney but had his law license suspended. As on a type of probation, he was not able to work as an attorney. He was able to be a mediator though (don't need to be an attorney). So I pushed for him to get the work. He was effective and it was also a good way to show that I don't think he should be put on the scrap heap. He'll be back soon enough.

The Wren family is coming to South Padre tomorrow for the 3 day weekend. They are bringing both sets of "girls", 2 teenage daughters and 2 fuzzy dogs. I am planning to do some bike riding and some surfing.

Fantasy football line up is set for next Thursday's game. I guess I'll miss it though since I'll be on a plane to Bogota Colombia Thursday night. That's coming up fast. I don't have to take my bike so that reduces the hassle of luggage a lot.

Georgia On My Mind

When I was in Houston recently, I asked my dad "What would be a good way to get tickets for the Masters?" He answered very uncharacteristically: a ticket broker/scalper. The thought of him purchasing a ticket from some stranger on the side of the road was crazy. He'd NEVER do something like that. Seemed a very unsporting approach - like shooting a deer at a picnic table.

Turns out, he was not himself, having been suffering from the after effects of prostate surgery and the insertation of a catheter. That would make anyone uncomfortable. After a bit of recovery time and thought, he let me know Monday "I have 2 tickets for the Wednesday April 7 2010 practice round". So mark your calendar, I'll be in Augusta, GA then. Still thinking about travel plans...

Fantasy football draft was Sunday and as usual, I got all excited at the auction and bid heavily on players I had intended to target. But good ones. I got
Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona
Philip Rivers, QB, San Diego
Greg Jennings, WR, Green Bay
Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee
Tony Gonzalez, TE, Atlanta
and so on

It was like an exam. After 3 hours of the draft I came home and slept for 12 hours. Must have needed it.

Monday, I did a half day of good work and then fly to Houston arriving at 3:00 p.m. and saw the Texans v. Vikings on Monday Night Football at Reliant Stadium. I went with my fellow dads from the Indian Princess program, John, Paul and... Fred (not Ringo). We had a good time. I took 2 pictures which I should post, one of the field (far away) and one of the roof (very close to us!). A good time. Texans lost 17-10.

NFL fans are a rowdy bunch. We were sitting next to this guy who was somewhat rough (lots of F-bombs). During halftime, I was in the restroom and about to wash my hands when all of a sudden I was next to him as he was trying to get into a fight with some other person - "Let's step outside" and so on. Needless to say, I ditched the sink and hit the door asap to get away from that mess. I didn't see him later on - hopefully they shut the door on him as he steped outside.

A 7:45 a.m. flight back and I was back at work at 10:00 a.m. Day turned out ok. I filed a bankrtupcy case - my first in several years and had court until 6:00 pm

Tomorrow a probate matter and Susan said that Sen. Arlen Specter will be at the Cantu residence for a fundraiser and to see the hospital.

Fantasy football draft Sunday

This weekend we have our 5th annual fantasy football draft. We work on an auction format (different from most leagues). So we can bid on any player we choose, only limited by the need to fill up the roster of 13 spots and use all of the $250 imaginary dollars. The top priced player ususally costs $100-$110 and things go down to the $1 level.

I won't divulge my secret plans for Sunday, but suffice to say I plan to do things a bit differently and a bit the same.

Saturday we have a church school board retreat all day so I'll be busy all weekend. Sarah has a car wash on Saturday.

Wurst Tri - New Braunfels

I completed the Wurst Tri in New Braunfels on Sunday. My friend Bill came in from Dallas. He was to participate but had a foot injury so he was there for support. He took some good pictures which will come later.

The swim was in the Landa Park spring fed pool, the distance was about 33oM. I started off freestyle but switched to breast stroke which I did better on. After the swim we ran about 200M to the transition area and got on the bike.

We then hit "California Hill" which was a steep one. It only got harder from there. The course was 14 miles out and back and was pretty hilly. I was pretty spent when done and it was hard to run.

I did my share of walking but did finish running nicely and the final time was 1:58.

That Sat. night we went to visit his friend Rocky who is an FBI agent who lives in Boerne. They lived in a nice neighborhood. I like the house a lot - would be easy to move in there. We drove back on Hwy 46 about 11:30 pm which was very dark, lots of deer out. I kept it slow at 55 and we made it back OK to San Marcos.

Sunday I went to Houston and stayed the night with my parents. My mom invited her cousin Anne, her daughter Katherine and her grandson Justin over and that was great to see them. I am thinking of doing the Malibu Tri in 2010. Katherine said I could stay with them. That would be 23 years after the last time I saw her.

Danielle's Quinceanera

Here we are at Danielle's quinceanera, the traditional Mexican celebration of a girl's 15th birthday. The party was held at Mario's Banquet Hall with a nice dinner. Sarah was in the Court, traditionally made of 14 Damas and 14 Chamberlains. The boys and girls did two dance performances, one waltz and one hip-hop. A nice evening. The kids have know each other a long time so it was a great opportunity to be together.

Craigslist tickets

I purchased 4 tickets to the Texans v. Vikings on Monday, Aug. 31 in Houston. So if you are watching, look for me in the upper, upper deck.
I learned a bit of ticket info. I bought these off Craigslist. As cousin Charlie put it, the difference between it and eBay. "Craigslist is free".
From the broker standpoint, the preseaon ticket is worth about 25% of a regular season game. I bought 4 tickets for a total of $100, or $25 each. Ah, the power of the hundred dollar bill...
Face value of these upper level seats is $35. A season ticket is $35 for 10 games, 8 regular season and 2 preseason. If you look at the preseason as a throwaway, the face value is really underpriced from a scalping standpoint. Perhaps a way of the NFL to create demand or a way to underprice a season ticket.
From my standpoint, it will be a good opportunity to see a game and go to the stadium w/o breaking the bank. Regular season to the new Cowboys stadium were going for $300 each. The last game I went to which was 2 years ago was $175/ticket at Texas Stadium (which is definitely past prime).

Summer winding down

This is the last week before school starts back. Sarah will start the 10th grade and that should be a big event. This Friday is the "Big Q" - Danielle's quinceanera. We're all going and it should be a bit party. Sarah is one of the "Damas" so she'll be performing a group dance with everyone.

Saturday, I will be heading to New Braunfels for the Wurst Triathlon on Sunday. 400M swim,
14 mile bike ride and 3 mile run. I've been training - don't think I'll set any records but looking forward to participating. Afterwards, I'm going to drive to Houston and see the family Sunday afternoon and evening and then drivc home Monday.

Jordan's last day of work is Friday and then he heads off to UT-Austin. I tried to give him some advice about meeting new people since that is never easy as a transfer student. Hopefully it got through. As the old Cathy cartoon once said (through the mother giving advice that Cathy ignored) "Sometimes I feel like an encyclopedia that no one ever opens"

Rocking for a Cure

The Rocking for a Cure benefit concert was last night and was a big success, raising nearly $5,000 for cancer and diabetes research. This was the brainchild of Alex B. Stockton who wanted to combine a school project with his music and band talents. A few well placed words later, the Renaissance Cancer Foundation and the RGV Diabetes Association were on board.

The party was at Alyssa's Acres, which is a nice bit of the country just in the city, about 20 acres. First was the local band LD-50 which was a nice acoustic duo followed by a short electric set. Then Alex's band Unforgiven Grace went on. Many of the Memorial HS kids were there so they had a friendly crowd. I heard they had been playing together for 5 years so they are certainly putting their time in. I'd like to be able to play like that.

After they finished, the Renaissance Rockers had a tough act to follow. They brought the A Game and probably did one of their best sets I have seen. Afterwards, Unforgiven Grace came back on, primarily playing for the remaining students as most of the attendees had left on a Sunday night. There was a new vocalist Alyssa and she did a fine job. It was the last show for a while for Andy who is going off to boarding school but there is a new successor bassist Eric who did a fine job also. Everyone had a good time.

All Day to Do It

There is nothing scheduled for this Saturday. No plans. I slept in and will likely be around the house a lot. It feels like a vacation.

I'd like to watch the Grand Junction town hall meeting by Pres. Obama this afternoon. Its at 5:15 p.m. CST. Susan will be there Monday and Tuesday so it'll be interesting to hear if they talk about the local approach which Susan is going to check out.

Plans for Colombia are firming up as that trip is less than 30 days away. I am going to have to pack my bike so I may go to the bike shop today to find out more info/particular suggested tools and so forth. I have a web site of a place to buy what looks to be a good container (more than just a cardboard box). I suppose I'd better get a list going. Saw where the weather there in Medellin is very good as expected (usually 24C, which sounds like California weather :)

Yesterday I met Susan and Sarah for lunch with several of Susan's co workers. That was fun. Then Sarah and I went out again. Good time.

Ready for the weekend

Tomorrow is Friday and I am ready. Things have been quiet and hot this week. Our office A/C is straining so I've left about 4 each day to get home, cool down and relax before going to get Sarah from band practice at 5:30. That's worked out great. It won't last forever but its made the week OK.

We were going to the island this weekend but now we are staying home so Sarah can work on a history project. We got her schedule straighted out today so she'll be taking health as a computer elective and will only have band at Memorial and will otherwise be at IB so we like that.

Finished the book Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich about Facebook founding at Harvard. Didn't sound like a fun college to be at - cutthroat competitiveness. That author also wrote 21 - like to write about smart people using their brains to beat the system and get rich. This book was right up his alley.

Looking to see the movie District 9 this weekend. That's been the usual schedule the past few weeks. I'll probably do a long run Saturday as well. The New Braunfels triathlon is coming up Sun. Aug. 23 so I'm about ready for it. Bill will not be participating but will be there cheering me on.

I've got a new place I'm interested in going: Aspen CO. I was thinking about that today. I hope to check it out. I saw where you can fly into Eagle CO which is a 70 mile drive away. There is even a direct flight from DFW. We'll see... It's also 125 from Grand Junction CO which is where Susan will be going next week to check out the hospital system there. Pres. Obama will be there doing a town hall meeting Saturday. Maybe he'll get shouted down like the Congressmen?

Dinner with Friends

My friends Frank and Bill came over for dinner tonight. When Bill and I started running we met Frank who has become a good friend. Frank entertained us with his exploits. Next week he leaves for Colorado where he will spend a few days acclimating to the altitude before running a 100 mile run, the Leadville 100. He said he had been training by running several laps - around the City of McAllen. His training run was 47 miles - will that be enough? He's done 50 and 63 miles, so my bet is on him. Should get a nice medal and a lifetime memory.

As we talked about events, he suggested we plan a long trip of our own. Bill agreed that he could do two weeks, so we have some thinking to do. Today was the second to last day for Melissa to cook so we had some tasty stir fried beef and brownies for dessert.

Something new

Here is something interesting regarding opposition to Congress flying on private jets. Get a real job if you want to do that!

I just figured out how to do that hyperlink - that is what is new! Pretty exciting for me...

I like reading those blogs which have those links. Now I can do it myself.

Frank and Bill are coming for dinner tomorrow night. Wednesday is Chef Melissa's last day so all good things must come to an end. Best wishes to her at Texas A&M. Whoop!!

I got up early today for the swimming. For some reason my ankle (left) is a bit sore. I hope it feels better soon.

Today has been a pretty good day. I had to get some old files out to see what I had done in 2001. Its amazing how much I've done that I remember what needs done but it was done so long ago.

Motorcycle Ride to South Padre Island

On Saturday, I rode at 2007 H-D Road King to South Padre Island with my friend Brian. He rode his Yamaha motorcycle. It was a great ride and great day. We got there after riding the back way on US 281 about 1:30 pm. We rode by the famous border fence - neither of us had seen it.

After getting there, we went to the condo and changed into beach wear - shorts and t shirt. It was great to get out of the riding jeans and boots. We then hung out at the Wahoo, eating, watching the water, talking. It was really relaxing. We then jumped in the pool and cooled off a while before getting back on and riding along the Expressway home. That was up close and personal with a lot of cars but we got back fine. I gassed up the motorcycle and returned it to Chico. Great day. I even got a Wahoo Saloon t shirt to remember the day.
