Labor Day

Even though the number of Americans laboring today may be in flux, today is a good day for our country.  As a nicely timed weather day in the Northern Hemisphere, the whole USA is enjoying a nice summer day.  Even here in South Texas it is not overly hot.  Walking the dog was quite pleasant even in the middle of the day.

Let's not forget that a holiday is not a break from labor but simply an opportunity to do a different kind of labor.  Projects around the house tend to move forward.  In Dallas, my friend Jeff is using this weekend to put up a whole new backyard fence by himself.  Read Shop Class as Soulcraft for a good description of the joys of work.  Or read  Steve Jobs particularly his lessons from his father Paul Jobs.

After 3 days of classes, Sarah is off today from school.  Here's hoping she enjoys both sides of the Labor Day coin:  an opportunity for rest, and an oppotunity to do a different but valuable kind of labor.  Here's to all Americans who work in their own ways to make this country better.
